Thinking of relocating when you retire?

A study has named picturesque Devon the top UK retirement location, with the county’s residents said to be most likely to experience a ‘happy and healthy’ life post-employment.

The research, which took into account crime rate, life expectancy and access to healthcare, saw Devon beat the neighbouring county of Dorset to the top spot, with Powys and Norfolk ranked in joint third.

Devon is a county beloved by many because of its many miles of coastline, including the areas known as the English Riviera and the Jurassic Coast, and its plethora of idyllic villages and towns, such as Salcombe and Exmouth.

Research suggests that those living in Devon live for an average of 20.5 years in retirement should they retire at 65. The average life expectancy for males is 84 and 87 for females, far above the UK average of 79.5 and 83.2 respectively.

The study, carried out by Prudential, also revealed that of those that retired in 2015, more than a third (36%) say they will be able to leave an inheritance to their families, which is well above the UK average of 29%.

All six South West counties were named in the overall top 20, with Gloucestershire (7th), Wiltshire (12th), Somerset (13th) and Cornwall (19th) joining Devon and Dorset at the top of the pile.

The overall top 20 is as follows:
