From Client to Compliance Director!

Some things in life have wonderful symmetry. Nathan Lewis loved being a colleague and client of Yianni Theodorou (Logic Wealth Planning, MD) so much, not long after the firm was established he teamed up with his friend again and is now part of a growing financial services company. Read his story…

Life in the financial planning world began for Nathan with a company called Fitzgerald Brierley in 1998, learning the ropes as an Independent Mortgage Adviser. “I focused on mortgages and protection insurance under the watchful eye of more experienced colleagues, including Yianni,” he revealed. “He was and remains a good friend, someone to trust and always get honest advice from. I learned a lot in a short space of time and really enjoyed working alongside him.”

But careers have many twists and turns. There were plenty more changes ahead for Nathan. Always involved with people and customers face-to-face, after a couple of years at Fitzgerald Brierley he switched to a home credit company.

Once a transparent surface technician, always a transparent surface technician!

Like many young men he was testing the water, finding the right work-life balance for him. “I was an agent, doing door-to-door collections, but I’d already had many other roles including a job as transparent surface technician (window cleaner). It was always client-focused work. I worked with schools dropping off educational books, sold fire extinguishers and personal insurance. Anything that made money and enabled me to chat to people and give them products and services that made a difference.”

In the background, with a good understanding of financial products, Nathan also became a client of Fitzgerald Brierley’s as his circumstances began to change…

Marriage, mortgages and management!

A busy working life was also additionally hectic on the personal front. “I got married in the mid-90s and by the time I worked with Yianni and tried a few other jobs, we had two young boys. That brought additional pressures, so getting promoted to assistant manager with the credit company was a huge bonus. That was working in Heywood.”

Yet again, however, a company restructure brought further career changes. Nathan was forced to look at other options and returned to his door-to-door work as an agent dealing directly with customers looking for small personal loans. “This also allowed me to become an Area Controller with a debt collection company, the stage before legal action and when bailiffs start knocking!”

Sliding financial doors…

Then a chance encounter changed everything. “By pure fluke, I saw Yianni driving down Albert Royds Street in Rochdale. I remembered his mobile number and gave him a call, as we were looking at taking out a new mortgage. It was like old times. We met up a few minutes later, had a good catch up and he explained that he was about to set up a new IFA practice. He asked if I’d like to join him. It was an easy decision.”

Nathan began working for Logic Wealth Planning, acting as office manager, also assisting with client files, and gaining knowledge of all aspects of financial planning. “It was a pleasure to work with Yianni again; he hadn’t changed his principles even though he was far busier as we now dealt with a multitude of financial products, including pension transfers.”

Then things went full circle. In 2009, Logic Wealth Planning bought out Fitzgerald Brierley as the Littleborough-based operation began to expand. “As we grew as a firm, I became Client Relationship Manager. That progressed to dealing with other business issues, including compliance. Then, in March 2017, a decade after joining the company, I was appointed Compliance Director. It continues to be an amazing journey.”

“My new role alongside Yianni is to implement and enforce values, policies and procedures within the company. I ensure that all aspects of the business operates in full compliance with the laws and regulations which govern the Financial Services industry, as well as upholding professional standards, accepted business practices, and internal standards. I continue to maintain and develop strong relationships with our clients and professional connections.”

Sport, charity and socialising…

The Logic Wealth Planning office enjoys a lively social scene and is a keen participant in local and regional charities. Several annual fundraisers raise impressive totals for good causes, and it’s always great to get out and about. It’s all part of the Logic culture that appeals to Nathan: “Although I now limit my playing days, I still enjoy football with a passion and will continue to learn how to play golf. The office golf days are a challenge, and one day I WILL shock everyone with the perfect round.”
